SCATTERED SUNFLOWER – Poem by Anke du Randt

Scattered sunflower

Scattered sunflower petals lay about

one for each time you decided to stay,

none enough for the years you’ll be gone.

“Is life worth it? Is life not?”

We now know the dreaded outcome,

know you lost the never ending winless fight.

You took your blanket and music too,

sat under the tree typing a letter,

but too late they came to try and save you.

Softly breathing for the last time,

a smile on your pale face as they pry

the gun from your hands, feeling you peacefully die.

Scattered sunflower petals lay about

a photo album with tearstained pages just beneath.

You were planning this for some time now?

-For Zara, a beautiful soul made of scattered sunflower petals
